For the first feature in our Creative Souls series, I am honored to introduce my sister, Donna.
Donna is a retired special education teacher, devoted mother, grandmother of two, breast cancer survivor, and talented knitter and crocheter. Through her creativity, she not only makes beautiful gifts for family and friends, but also contributes countless handmade items to charitable organizations that serve people in need.
I loved learning more about her creative journey and the role knitting and crocheting have played throughout her life. I'm sure you will too!
Discovering the Joy of Yarn
Unlike many fiber artists who learn from a parent or grandparent, Donna learned to knit and crochet through online videos and classes at local yarn shops.
Her first projects were simple washcloths, but those early stitches led to a lifelong passion for creating with yarn.
When asked what she loves most about knitting and crocheting, her answer was refreshingly honest:
"I get lost in the moment and retreat from reality."

"Giving something handmade makes me feel joyful."

After she first began knitting and crocheting, she searched online for groups in her area and soon found a welcoming community of fellow makers who shared her passion.

The friendships, encouragement, and shared creativity have become an important part of her life.

Using Creativity to Help Others
Donna's group does much more than gather to knit and crochet.
Together they create blankets, scarves, hats, mittens, gloves, and socks for organizations serving homeless individuals and hospital patients of all ages.
For Donna, these projects are about much more than yarn and needles.
"It means that I am using my talents to help those in need."
Her commitment to helping others through handmade creations is a beautiful example of how creativity can make a difference in the lives of people we may never even meet.

A Project Close to Her Heart
As a breast cancer survivor, one of Donna's most meaningful projects is creating handmade breast prostheses for women who have undergone mastectomies or lumpectomies through the Knitted Knockers program.
This work combines her creativity, compassion, and personal experience in a deeply meaningful way.
When asked about her favorite project, she didn't hesitate.
"My favorite piece I ever made and will continue to make are special handmade breast prostheses for women who have had breast cancer."
For many women, these handmade creations provide both comfort and confidence during a difficult chapter of life.

Creativity Through Life's Challenges
After many years as a special education teacher, Donna found that knitting and crocheting became an important way to decompress from the stresses of her profession.
She often worked on projects during her lunch breaks, using those quiet moments to recharge and find balance.
During her own breast cancer journey, creativity became a source of comfort as well.
When asked if knitting and crocheting helped her during treatment, her answer was simple and powerful:
"Yes. It distracted me from feeling anxious."
Sometimes the healing power of creativity is found in those small moments of peace.
Whether navigating the demands of teaching, facing health challenges, or simply managing the busyness of everyday life, knitting and crocheting have provided Donna with a sense of calm, comfort, and purpose.

Passing Creativity to the Next Generation
Donna's love of fiber arts is now inspiring the next generation.
Her granddaughter has begun crocheting amigurumi characters, while her grandson proudly wears the "yarn hats" she creates especially for him.
Seeing creativity continue through younger family members brings her great joy.
Today, Donna is working on a blanket for her bed while also completing several handmade gifts for loved ones.

Donna's Advice for New Knitters and Crocheters
If someone is interested in learning to knit or crochet, Donna offers simple but wise advice:
"Just take one stitch at a time."
It's advice that applies not only to crafting but perhaps to life itself.
When asked what creativity means to her, Donna answered:
"Freedom to express myself."
